FIESTAS AND FESTIVALS

In this Blog Post, I am going to keep a running list of what Fiestas and Festivals are on throughout the year, as the dates do not vary much and this means that by the time this blog is a year old, we will have a running archive of whats on, for next year.
Often the programmes do not come out till just before, so until I can get all the information will just put a link to a spanish site which gives last years programme. This post will be permanently listed on the site under "posts to keep your eye on for updates"

FIESTA - LA SEMANA DE LA HUERTA Y EL MAR

LA SEMANA DE LA HUERTA Y EL MAR (The week of the sea and the vegetable garden) is a colourful, joyful explosion of festivities held every year in August in Los Alcazares.

Starts today Friday the 13th of August and ends the 21st of August.
It history comes from that the farm workers would come down to the coast with there horses and carriages for a week in the month of august, as there was little work for them, and cool off in the seas of the Mar Menor.


Now it is held as a fiesta week and down in the Rambla (see location below) there are little huts and makeshift bars set up. The week is full of Folkloric groups playing and dancing, also there is a craft fair and craft demonstrations and each day there is are "dishes of the day" being sold from the little bars that are set up along the Rambla.

There will be groups from all over the world, like Peru, Serbia.

The tickets can be bought on the evening from 8.30pm and are only a few euros, unless its a bigger performance and then its a bit more. Or you could just go down and wander around the market and grab some delicacy to eat. Every night there are paid performances, but the artesan market and stalls are open from 8.30pm.

A summary in English is below, including what "dishes of the day" and handicraft demonstrations are on. If I have put a ? it means its something I am not sure of the translation, so have translated best I can. I would have said the best nights to go down would be Saturday 14th or Sunday 15th, if you do not wish to pay for the entertainment.


Friday 13th

20.30pm -Official opening of the week, all stalls and artesan fair and eateries will be open.

22.30pm - Performances

Dishes of the Day - Mondongo of lamb in sauce, rice pudding

Handicraft demonstration - making espadriles



Saturday 14th

19:30pm - Procession with horses, carriages, folkloric groups, music and floats

(this seems to be setting off further up the road, but will come down the main street Avenida de la libertad)

22.30pm - Performances

Dishes of the Day - Pigs trotters in sauce? (manos de cerda en salsa)- Delicias de manzana

Handicraft demonstration- Bread making



Sunday 15th

21:30pm - live performance (this one looks like it could be free, as is located in the rambla area)

Dishes of the Day - Conejo con patatas al ajo cabañil (rabbit) - paparajotes (battered lemon leaves)

Handicraft demonstration - needlework - cross stitch



Monday 16th

10:30pm - Performances

Dishes of the Day: Patatas al vino blanco (white wine potatoes?)

Handicraft demonstration - lace making (crotchet?)



Tuesday 17th

10:30pm - Performances

Dishes of the day - Mondogo de cordero (lamb) - donuts

Handicraft demonstration - chair weaving?



Wednesday 18th

10:30pm - Ballet National - Ukraine (ticket)

Dishes of the Day - Albondigas con ternera en salsa (meatballs) - natillas (custard dessert)

San Javier Jazz Festival - 2nd July to 31st July
This festival is celebrated on fridays, saturdays and sundays throughout June and is thought to be one of the best Jazz festivals in Spain

Cante de las Minas -La Union -Flamenco - 3 August to 14th August

International Tourist Interest

Competition held in the mining town of La Unión. For a week, in the incomparable modernist setting of the Public Market, it is a succession of performances by aspirant beginners in quest of the coveted trophy - the miner's lamp - together with other famous singers.

Cante de Flamenco -Lo Ferro (Roldan) 23rd August to 28th August

This Flamenco festival is celebrated in the small town of lo Ferro (which is adjacent to Roldan) and has a deep popular flavour to it.

Festival of Theatre Music and Dance - San Javier - 3rd August to 24th August
One of the most important summer festivals in the Murcia Region, which, here on the shores of the Mar Menor, combines classical and avant-garde theatre, ethnic music, prestigious soloists and classical and modern dance troupes from all over the world.
